Overview

Founded in 1857 and named for the Kentucky statesman Henry Clay, Clay County was settled in north-central Kansas by sturdy farmers who were drawn to the area’s fertile soil, picturesque Republican River Valley and numerous creeks and streams.

As of the U.S. Census in 2010, there were 8,535 people and 3,407 households residing in the county. The population density was 14 people per square mile. There were 4,032 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile.
